KRock No More

A very sad affair occurred last week; we lost a radio station. Now, technically the station still exists, but they decided to change their entire format from hard rock and classic grooves to a Top 40, bubble gum brand of today’s modern hits. They’ve gone from churning out AC/DC and Papa Roach to playing the likes of Katy Perry and Beyonce. Now, I don’t have anything against Beyonce, I just feel that I can hear her music on approximately 50 other stations in the metro area, and I’m not trying to find her music all that often.

In addition to losing the rock and roll, the radio station also canned their morning show that was up for contract renegotiations, the Opie and Anthony show. I am a huge fan of that show and they had mentioned that it could be the end of their free radio career (they are available on satellite radio) so we knew it was coming, but it still hurt to flip on the radio for my drive to work and not hear the boys. Instead I was greeted with music.

Rock stations are going the way of the dinosaur. They are becoming harder to find. And really good ones are almost nonexistent. Most of the rock stations in my area are either classic rock stations, or stations that claim they play yesterday’s rock and today’s rock, but the percentage is like 75—25 in favor of yesterday. There is but one radio station that has modern hits and little-to-no classic rock, The Bone. It’s a local station out of Lehigh Valley, PA. I discovered it within the last year, and I am loving this station. I like to hear current, modern, hard rock tracks, and I don’t have satellite radio (yet). The bone satiates my need for the new music.

K-Rock has been a rock station (of some sort) for as long as I can remember. It’s sad to see it flip and I will miss the station. I’ve already removed it from my preset list (#1 by the way) and placed The Bone there instead. Rest in Peace, K-Rock. RIP.

Comments are open. Feel free to post some.

We've got ZIP here in the Northwest. KUFO is the local "rock" station, but during the afternoon rush we are overexposed to Court and Fat Boy who churn out very sophomoric "humor" which consists of talking about their weiners, their butts, and their poop - and a very few rock tunes thrown in. The last duo, Craig and Pork Chop were AWESOME! Intelligent humor - but of course you can't have that.

Yes, sadly, the age of Rock Radio is at it's sunset.
