Dropkick Murphys And George Killian's Set To Pump Up The Volume

George Killian’s Irish Red and Dropkick Murphys have been making noise in the beer industry and music industry for years. Now the two are teaming together to turn that noise into a full-blown ruckus! The George Killian’s Irish Red Ruckus invites legal-drinking-age consumers to raise a glass and take a shot at winning a trip to Boston, where they’ll have the chance to attend an exclusive Dropkick Murphys concert Nov. 17 at the Paradise Rock Club.

In addition, Killian’s has been scouring clubs and concert halls around the country to invite bands for a chance to open at the Irish Red Ruckus. Bands have been enlisting their fans, friends and family to vote for them to get to the Ruckus. Four finalists will be determined by the most votes received in Colorado, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. A panel of judges will select the opening band, and Killian’s will announce the opener on Oct. 12.

“Dropkick Murphys rock, so we’re absolutely thrilled to be featuring them at the George Killian’s Irish Red Ruckus,” said Killian’s Brand Manager Brad Johnson. “The band’s unique, rockin’ Celtic sound is a great fit with Killian’s roots.”

Known for their complex distillation of classic punk rock, Celtic folk and American rock 'n roll, the critically acclaimed Dropkick Murphys have sold more than four million albums worldwide. Their latest album, Going Out in Style, entered the Billboard 200 chart at No. 6 on March 1, 2011. It’s the group’s sixth consecutive studio effort to chart on The Billboard 200. Going Out of Style is Dropkick Murphys second album released on their own Born & Bred label. The album features guest appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Fat Mike of NOFX, Chris Cheney of The Living End and more.

Those ages 21 and up can also enter the George Killian’s Irish Red Ruckus sweepstakes (void in Calif.) for a chance to win two VIP tickets to the Ruckus. Now through Oct. 15, those eligible can text RUCKUS to 90464 (standard text message rates apply) or visit www.GeorgeKillians.com and complete the online entry. Ten winners will be awarded trips for two to Boston for the exclusive Nov. 17 concert, including air transportation, lodging and spending money.

For complete rules and details on how to enter, visit www.GeorgeKillians.com

George Killian’s Irish Red is an Irish lager based on an original family recipe that dates back to 1864 in Enniscorthy, Ireland. George Lett first brewed a ruby ale that later became the inspiration for George Killian’s Irish Red. He used only pure spring water and the finest caramel malts roasted longer and slower to give his brew a rich red color and distinctive taste. The beer is still known for its rich amber color and thick, creamy head. More information is available at www.GeorgeKillians.com or at www.Facebook.com/GeorgeKillians.

Friday's Rockin' Roundup - Playoffs Edition

The winter sports are finally drawing to a close. Most regular readers of The Rock And Roll Guru know how much I love baseball, but may not realize that I am an avid sports fan in general. During the winter when I can’t see winter league baseball games, I follow hockey and basketball. For the first time in many years, both the basketball team that I follow (The New York Knicks) and the hockey team that I follow (The Pittsburgh Penguins) are in the post season. For me, this is a real treat. It means that there is a game on every night that I have interest in.

Playoffs are a real thrill for me, as I enjoy rooting my team to victory. After having followed their every move, shot, miss, decisive win, and agonizing loss, rooting for the team in the playoffs is extra special. I only hope that both the Knicks and the Penguins can go deep into the postseason and continue to make the thrills last.

Here’s what rocked this week:

Fantastic Video Interview With Nikki Sixx
Over at Rolling Stone, there is a great video interview with Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue. He dishes the dirt on the upcoming tour with Poison and the New York Dolls, the history of his songs, and the upcoming movie, “The Dirt.” This is must watch stuff!

Guitar Center’s King Of The Blues Contest Is Underway
Continuing its support of aspiring artists, Guitar Center (www.guitarcenter.com) the world's largest musical instrument retailer, today launched its fifth-annual King of the Blues, the nationwide search for the next great undiscovered blues guitar player. Guitarists can sign-up at any of Guitar Center's 216 stores across the country for the chance to compete for over $50,000 in prizes including studio time with Grammy Award-winning producer Pete Anderson. Five finalists will perform for a panel of celebrity judges at the King of the Blues finals at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, playing alongside guitar titan Warren Haynes. For more information, or to sign up, click on the link above.

Interview With Rush Live From Madison Square Garden
As most of you know, I went to see Rush at Madison Square Garden last Sunday night. Rolling Stone did a great interview with Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson before the concert. There is some solid show footage cut in as well. This is definitely worth checking out.

Record Store Day Arrives Tomorrow
We end this version of Friday’s Rockin’ Roundup with a brief reminder. Record Store Day is tomorrow, April 16th. Get out and support your local record retailer. There will be specials galore, and in some cases, in store appearances. If you know of a local dealer near you, pay them a visit tomorrow. You just might find yourself a new favorite store.

This Is Your Last Chance To Win From Good Homes Tickets

Hello faithful readers! I just wanted to provide this reminder that your chance to win tickets to see From Good Homes live at The Wellmont Theatre is quickly coming to a close. All entries must be in my e-mail box by 11:59 PM on Monday, November 15, 2010. Any entries received after that date/time will not be considered. Get those entries in now and good luck!

HOW TO ENTER/HOW TO WIN
To enter, email ryovie@gmail.com with the words From Good Homes in the subject line. In the body of the email, you must tell me the name of all of From Good Homes studio albums. That’s all there is to it. Any emails received that do not have From Good Homes in the subject line, or the name of the studio albums in the body of the email, will not be eligible.

This contest is open until November 15th. A winner will be announced for each night at that time. Winners are chosen at random from all eligible entries received. So, what are you waiting for? Send that email now!

ABOUT FROM GOOD HOMES
The genesis of From Good Homes dates back to a high school band, when childhood friends Todd Sheaffer, Brady Rymer, and Patrick Fitzsimmons came together in rural, Northwestern New Jersey. Originally called “Old Crow”, and later evolving into “The Dogs”, the core line-up remained. With the addition of Dan Myers in 1988, and Jamie Coan in 1990, the band From Good Homes was fully formed.

Named after a judge’s explanation for leniency after the young band broke in to a club to finish their set, the band “from good homes” released 5 albums during their career- 3 of which were released by RCA Records. Their upbeat approach, solid songwriting, and unique sound allowed them to quickly develop a dedicated following on the touring circuit.

The band performed over 1,500 shows across North America, including tours with Dave Matthews Band, Ratdog featuring Bob Weir and shows with Bob Dylan, Guster, Widespread Panic, Hootie & The Blowfish, Blues Traveler and many more.

Bringing together rock, jazz, folk, celtic and jam-band influences under one umbrella, rooted in Todd Sheaffer’s inspired songwriting, From Good Homes forged their own, instantly lovable music. Their unique style prompted one critic to affectionately label the band’s blend of influences as “Hick-Pop”. After disbanding in 1999, band members went on to embark on individual projects.

Friday's Rockin' Roundup - Take This Job And Shove It Edition

As most of you regular readers know, cousin Ryo holds a day job to pay the bills, earn money, etc. As much as I would love to make this blog my only source of income, I also would like to eat. Lately, my 9-5 has been taking over my entire life and I don’t like it one bit. Between unrealistic deadlines, red tape processes, low morale, and the ultimate uncaring of the absentee ownership, it’s been a rough couple of months.

Things don’t look to be getting any better in the near future, and while I am in the process of doing the best I can to change my outlook, it’s an arduous process. What this all means is that my job is leaving me exhausted, which is eventually going to affect The Rock And Roll Guru. Hopefully, the effect will be so minor that no one will notice, but it may not. I may end up skipping an entire week of posting without warning due to having a mental breakdown. Or, I may just say to my boss “take this job and shove it, I ain’t working here no more!” in which case I’ll have plenty of time to write, but I might be eating cat food for dinner. I’ll be sure to keep you posted as to where things end up.

Here’s what rocked this week:

Guitar Center’s $1500 Gear Giveaway
Do the holidays get you down? Do you have to buy gifts for everyone, but no one buys you squat? Well, perhaps you need to enter Guitar Centers holiday wishlist and get your shot at $1500 worth of great gear. Your Holiday Wishlist Sweepstakes has Guitar Center offering ten lucky winners a chance to win $1500 in gear from any one of the 214 Guitar Center stores across the country including guitars, amplifiers, drums, keyboards and pro-audio equipment. Starting Friday, October 1st through Sunday, December 12th, individuals can enter by going to and building their wishlist (full details online).

MusicPix Is Worth A Visit
An interesting website that I discovered this week is MusicPix.net. This is a site with concert photos, news, reviews, and interviews. It is a very appealing place to visit. And now they’ve released a mobile app. Musicpix.net is the premiere home for live concert photography on the internet with a massive library of live concert images and is now available for music lovers on the go. An iPad version will be available by mid-October. Music fans can explore live music photos, access up-to-date news, artist interviews and the latest tour information. This one-of-a-kind mobile app features tens of thousands of evergreen and ever-growing professional concert photos. The app allows fans to stay informed via the latest music news and tour information and see imagery of international artists LIVE in concert like never before. Fans can now put down their phone and enjoy the show instead of trying to capture the moment themselves.

Pink Set To Release A Greatest Hits Record
I don’t mean this to sound harsh, but I didn’t realize that Pink has been around long enough to have a greatest hits record. The set *due November 16th) will include two new songs, one titled Raise Your Glass, with the other still being worked on. You can hear the single of Raise Your Glass below.

Friday's Rockin' Roundup - Going On Vacation Edition

Next week, The Rock And Roll Guru will be on vacation. My family and I are heading to the lake for a week. We’ll be hiking, rafting, eating and drinking and enjoying some much needed downtime. I’ve been looking forward to it for quite some time, as has my wife. My daughter, well, she’s a teenager. When it comes to spending time with your family, I don’t think teenagers look forward to much.

While I’m on vacation, there will be no updates to the Guru. I’d like to say that I was ahead of the game and the site will go unaffected, but that wouldn’t be the truth. With my regular work schedule, plus all the other activities in my life, keeping up with the site has become a bit of a struggle at times. It’s worth it though, it’s always worth it. However, I am barely keeping up with weekly deadlines, so actually being ahead of the game is a luxury that is only a dream for now. Perhaps one day that will change, once I achieve my financial freedom and I am able to work part time and write full time (instead of the other way around).

Here’s what rocked this week:

The Dave Navarro Signature Guitar Us Now Available
It seems like everyone has a signature guitar these days. From Gene Simmons to Slash, all the guitar greats have their own signature line of guitars. This is Dave Navarro’s, an acoustic beauty from Epiphone. If you’re in the market for a new acoustic guitar, check this out.

25 Years Of Farm Aid
Farm Aid celebrates their 25th anniversary this year. The concert will take place on October 2nd in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (the first time the event has been located there). No word on performers, yet, but I expect that Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp will perform. I’m sure that Dave Matthews will be there as well.

Hear The New Buckcherry CD Before You Buy It
All Night Long came out this week. Even though you should buy it because it’s Buckcherry and they never steer you wrong, you can listen to it first if you must. Click on the link above to hear every track from the album. Then get out to the store and pick up a copy!

Guitar Center’s Drum Off Has Begun
Drummers, here’s your chance to be the next big thing. Sign up at a guitar center near you for the chance to win $25,000, a custom built drum kit, and a slew of other prizes. Click the link to learn all the details.

Friday's Rockin' Roundup - M3 Festival Edition

Today, your Cousin Ryo is on a road trip to Columbia, Maryland. I’m heading there to attend this year’s M3 Festival. Hard Rock Hideout’s (http://www.hardrockhideout.com/) Rob Rockitt and Stone from Metal Odyssey (http://www.meralodyssey.wordpress.com/) will be there with me. I hope to be able to catch up with Bring Back Glam’s (http://www.bringbackglam.com/) Allyson as well. We are all attending due to our love of hard rock and hair metal.

The acts on this year’s bill are incredible and include some bands I’ve never seen before. Trixter, Nelson, Jetboy, and Kix are all performing and they are all bands that I have never seen in concert before. Also, the show’s headliners, The Scorpions – I’ve never seen them live either. Other acts (that I have seen) include LA Guns, Cinderella, Warrant, Winger, and Vince Neil. I am really looking forward to Winger’s set. I LOVE their new album (Karma) and I hope they play more than one song from it. I know their set time is limited (45 minutes), but they owe it to themselves and their fans to play the new songs.

Going to M3? Look for me. I’ll be there handing out business cards to anyone that is interested. I wish I had Guru T-Shirts. That would be cool. I guess that’s something to consider for next year! Expect a full report of M3 not only here, but at the other great rock, glam, and metal sites (mentioned above) as well. M3 is bound to be an incredible day of fun for all. I hope to see you there!

And while I was packing a bag, checking my stash of Aqua Net, and debating on which dew rag to wear, here’s what rocked this week:

Midas and SPIN Present Rock The Highway
Appreciating how summer travel, music festivals, and great music go hand in hand, Midas and SPIN have partnered up this summer to present the Rock the Highway contest where musicians can submit an original song that they think could be the next great road song (accepted in either fully produced or acoustic versions). Midas will pick the best of the bunch and put them up for a fan vote. Six bands will win a share of $17,000 in cash prizes PLUS appear in an ad in SPIN Magazine. For those who don’t want to submit content, Rock the Highway also includes a sweepstakes where music fans can vote for their favorite road songs of all time and enter to win prizes including VIP passes to select summer music festivals, navigation systems, satellite radio systems, gas cards and more. This is definitely worth checking out.

New Band – Awesome Song

Win A Chance To Open For KISS

GUITAR CENTER AND KISS JOIN FORCES TO PROVIDE CAREER-ALTERING OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNSIGNED BANDS NATIONWIDE

Guitar Center On-Stage: KISS Offers 22 Unsigned Bands The Once-In-A-Lifetime Chance to Open For The Legendary Band during US Tour

(Westlake Village, CA) June 1, 2010 - Continuing its ongoing support of aspiring artists, Guitar Center (http://www.guitarcenter.com/), the world's largest musical instrument retailer, today announced that it has teamed up with rock and roll icons KISS (http://www.kissonline.com/), and leading digital media company for entertainment, Eventful, for a revolutionary music program: Guitar Center On-Stage, a competition that provides unsigned bands and artists the career-altering opportunity to open for KISS on their upcoming North American tour, The Hottest Show on Earth. A video announcement can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5F6gH3NL7nQ.

One band from each of twenty-two markets across the United States will be chosen to play at a KISS show. At the conclusion of the tour, KISS will choose the best of the twenty-two bands to receive the grand prize that includes a $10,000 Guitar Center shopping spree. Now through September 1, 2010, bands across the country are invited to register at GCOnstage.com.

"With Guitar Center On-Stage, we are giving bands across the country the mind-blowing chance to open for one of the greatest rock groups on the planet when KISS comes to their town," said KISS. "A lot of rock's greatest bands got their start opening for KISS including AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Rush, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Mötley Crüe among many others. Thirty-seven years ago someone gave KISS the opportunity to become the Hottest Band on Earth. Now, KISS and Guitar Center are returning the favor by offering unsigned bands the opportunity to open for KISS on The Hottest Show on Earth."

Guitar Center and KISS have partnered with leading digital media company, Eventful Inc., tapping Eventful's unique "Demand It!" platform to run the Guitar Center On-Stage band submission and fan voting process. Eventful will design and execute the competition platform as well as assist in creating and driving a powerful social media marketing campaign to engage consumers, increase local demand and drive awareness.

Guitar Center On-Stage is an ongoing revolutionary program developed to organically scout and launch unsigned, independent artists by providing career-altering opportunities through partnerships with some of the world's greatest artists. Last year's competition was judged by Mötley Crüe and saw the winning band, The Last Vegas, go on to open for Mötley Crüe on tour and subsequently top iTunes critics' 2009 "Rock Singles of the Year List" with their hit single "I'm Bad."

Guitar Center On-Stage is just one of many Guitar Center initiatives created to foster growth and success within the music community, including its annual Drum-Off, Your Next Record, Guitar Center Sessions and King of the Blues competitions, among others.

Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth, and Whitesnake. But it is as a solo artist that Vai has
made his most valuable contributions, earning him three Grammy wins, eight

Hope For The Unsigned Artist

I was thrilled to see the following press release last week:

GUITAR CENTER PRESENTS YOUR NEXT RECORD WITH SLASH
RECEIVES MORE THAN 8,000 UNSIGNED BAND SUBMISSIONS IN FIRST MONTH

Submissions Open Through April 30th

Westlake Village, CA, March 3, 2010 -Guitar Center (www.guitarcenter.com), the world's largest musical instrument retailer, today announced that Guitar Center Presents Your Next Record with Slash, a first-of-its-kind unsigned band competition, has received more than 8,000 submissions from unsigned bands across the country, in its first month alone. The competition provides emerging artists the chance to win the ultimate career-altering opportunity: record a 3-song EP with legendary producer, Mike Clink (Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, Megadeth) and have Slash write, record and perform on the winning artists' single. Through April 30th, 2010, unsigned bands across the United States are still invited to submit their music at YourNextRecord.com for a chance to win the aforementioned prize package, which also includes:

"The response so far has been tremendous and a lot of the music we've received sounds amazing but I still want to hear more," said Slash. "We're looking to find a great band with some kick ass songs and good energy, who hasn't been able to get their foot in the door otherwise, and take them to the next level."

Why did this thrill me? Because it means there are still artists out there that believe in their music and themselves. Every year, I try to visit a bar or club and check out some local talent that no one has ever heard of. Most times, the bands are really good. When you ask them why they aren’t on more of a national level, they claim that it’s because they can never get the right break.

Personally, I think a lot of motivation and ambition is lacking in artists that are unsigned, but not always. Let’s face it, most people who set out to do (whatever) in life, never get very far because they give up too soon. Take this blog for example. What if I gave up after three months because I didn’t have a large enough audience? Hell, what if I gave up now for that reason? I would always be sitting around wondering what if…? Instead, I am looking to move forward as furious as I can to continue to keep this blog growing and gaining readership. The hard work is paying off.

The same is true for those unsigned bands. The ones that actually took the time to send in their demos in the hope that they will be picked are the bands that I admire the most. To make it in today’s music industry takes a passion and dedication that not many performers have. Some acts are happy being the local talent, but others are much more ambitious. That ambition could be the difference between national success and obscurity.

To all of the bands that took the time to send in their work to Slash, wishful for a record contract, I say congratulations. Even if your band is not the one picked, you’ve already won. You’ve already done more than 85% of the other acts out there that are still sitting and hoping and wishing.

And to all those bands that ultimately end up not winning this contest, don’t give up hope. Keep promoting your work, keep playing live music whether it be at a backyard BBQ or at a packed house nightclub. The more you get your name and your music out there and the more live shows you play, the more you are going to be known and perhaps one day, break into the big time. I applaud your effort.

Comments are open. Feel free to post some.
